It is located on the central shoal of the most prosperous central axis of Guangzhou, being the world's largest urban central complex ecosystem and the only existing large lake and tidal river wetland on the central shoal at city center in China.

The design principle of "emphasizing ecology, less intervention, micro-transformation, and demonstrating characteristics" has been proposed during design; the Project focuses on gradually transforming a single productive fruit forest into a wetland habitat with biodiversity, creating a good habitat for birds and other animals and plants, inheriting the farming culture of the Lingnan Wetland, highlighting the characteristics of the national demonstrative Duoji fruit forest wetland, and building a land of idyllic beauty in the center of an international metropolis. Supporting facilities such as bird-watching houses, bird-watching platforms and wetland stations are improved, the functions of popular science education, leisure and sightseeing in wetlands are activated, a national demonstrative nature education school is established, nature education institutions are introduced for long-term stationing, and representative national wetland parks are united to perform the wetland study tour project, so as to promote resource exchange among wetland parks, guide the whole society to participate in, and build a sharing platform for nature education.

In 2020, the Haizhu Wetland was present on the international stage on behalf of China, and competed for the 12th Dubai International Best Model Award for Sustainable Development in 2019. On June 5 (World Environment Day), the image film of the Haizhu Wetland was repeatedly displayed on the Chinese screen in Times Square, New York, USA, showing the achievements of China's ecological civilization construction at the "crossroad" of the world.
